Hydrogen-Rich Water in Older Adults: Promising Results for Healthy Aging
A recent randomized controlled trial (RCT) on hydrogen-rich water (HRW) produced by OG Hydr8 tablets has revealed exciting benefits for older adults aged 70 and above. Conducted by researchers at the Universities of Novi Sad and Belgrade, Serbia, this study was published in the journal Experimental Gerontology.
Why This Study Matters
The global population is aging rapidly. In 2016, about 50 million U.S. adults were over 65, representing 15% of the population. By 2030, this number is expected to reach 71 million, and nearly 98 million by 2060, when older adults will make up roughly 25% of the population.
With aging comes increased risk of metabolic decline, DNA instability, cognitive impairment, and reduced quality of life. Nutraceuticals like hydrogen-rich water may help support metabolism, reduce inflammation, protect DNA, and promote healthy aging.
Study Design: How OG Hydr8 Was Tested
This study was a randomized controlled trial (RCT)—the gold standard for clinical research. Participants were randomly assigned to either:
- Experimental group: receiving high-concentration HRW (15 ppm hydrogen in 250 mL water, twice daily, totaling 7.5 mg of H2).
- Control group: receiving a placebo drink (0 ppm hydrogen), matched in taste, appearance, and magnesium content.
Participants
- 40 older adults (20 women, 20 men) aged 70+ (20% over 80)
- Normal or overweight BMI
- No major acute or chronic diseases
- Able to follow study instructions, including blood tests and intervention compliance
Participants consumed HRW or the placebo for six months, twice daily on an empty stomach, while maintaining their usual lifestyle and avoiding other supplements.
Key Findings
1. Telomere Length and DNA Stability
Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. Shortened telomeres are linked to aging and disease, while longer telomeres are associated with improved survival.
After six months, the HRW group showed increased telomere length, while the placebo group experienced a decline. This effect was notable even during COVID-19 lockdowns, a period known to increase stress and accelerate telomere shortening.
There was also a trend toward increased DNA methylation, another marker of chromosomal stability. These results suggest OG Hydr8 may help delay age-related diseases and support longevity.
2. Oxidative Stress and Inflammation
Aging naturally increases oxidative stress, where reactive molecules (ROS) damage DNA, proteins, and lipids. Hydrogen-rich water acts as a potent antioxidant.
After six months, HRW consumption:
- Reduced markers of oxidative stress, including serum malondialdehyde and ferric reducing ability of plasma
- Increased serum magnesium levels, supporting energy production, muscle function, nerve health, and bone structure
This demonstrates that HRW helps balance oxidative stress and inflammation, both key drivers of aging.
3. Brain Metabolism and Cognitive Function
Cognitive decline is a natural part of aging, but HRW showed targeted brain benefits:
- Increased choline and N-acetylaspartate (NAA) in the frontal grey matter
- Improved creatine levels in parietal white matter
Choline supports acetylcholine production, essential for memory, mood, and intelligence. NAA plays a critical role in brain metabolism and energy. These results indicate hydrogen-rich water may enhance brain viability and function in older adults.
Supporting Healthy Aging
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines healthy aging as maintaining functional ability for wellbeing in older age, including mobility, decision-making, social engagement, and independence.
Taking proactive steps such as reducing stress, improving nutrition, and incorporating hydrogen-rich water into your routine can help support these goals.
OG Hydr8 hydrogen tablets are a research-backed tool that may:
- Improve metabolic and cardiovascular health
- Reduce oxidative stress and inflammation
- Support cognitive health
- Promote longevity and overall quality of life
